Michael Stoddart - A thoroughbred musician

Choir Trainer

Church Music

Since my teenage years, I have been directing choirs in churches and cathedrals in the UK and in France.

Spotlight

Within two years at St Mary's Portsea I increased child membership by 500%, introduced new choral services and dramatically broadened the choir's repertoire.

Small ensembles

Since leaving school I have created and directed various small ensembles – Magdalen Chamber Choir, Capella Consort, English Renaissance, Cantores Gaudentes.

Spotlight:

I founded English Renaissance in 1992. Made up of eight professional English singers, we sang mainly Renaissance music (Sheppard, Taverner, Byrd, Victoria, and Lassus) but also madrigals and contemporary music. We performed essentially around Paris including the British Embassy. We were invited to prestigious festivals in France (Boscherville, Camp du Drap d'Or + Fecamp) and England. Recordings are widely available under the Gift of Music label.

Choral Societies

I have been directly involved in various choral societies throughout my career, including Hayes Choral Society, Musicanti, Esterhazy Singers and Portsmouth Choral Union

Spotlight:

For 10 years I directed an 80-strong choral society in Paris which gave regular concerts in important churches to audiences of 600+. These were accompanied by a large-scale orchestra I made up from professional musicians from groups such as Les Arts Florissants. Soloists were drawn from UK and France (William Byrd Ensemble, Radio France, Les Arts Florissants)
